Favicons

INTRODUCTION: So what are favicons? Look at the below screenshot of Mozilla Firefox:

See all four of those red arrows? See what they're pointing to? Good. Those are called favicons. People put them on their website for different reasons. For example, if you were a company, you'd probably want to use your logo as a favicon. If you are another type of site, you may still want to put your logo as the favicon, or you could make it something that resembles your site. For another example, my site is called The Castle of the Hybrid Goomba so I used to have a Goomba as the favicon. Now I have a favicon that resembles my site through the letters TCHG. So you can use you're favicon for a variety of things. It's just up to you. So, you want one on your site? Note first that some web hosts don't let you have your own favicon. Check first to see. Now that's done, all right! Here's how:

First create your favicon. I use the GIMP for pretty much everything, but use whatever program you want. If you are a good spriter, it probably would be great if you sprited your icon from scratch. OK, so when you're saving your favicon, name it something like favicon.ico . Whatever name you name it, it doesn't really matter besides the file extension. So if you want, you could name it clonedchicken.ico or something of the like if you wanted to.

The next part is the coding. Insert the following code into the HEAD section of your webpage replacing example.ico with the image name of your favicon.

Now you should be done. Just upload the file(s) and look at your site. Cool eh?

AFTERNOTES: Favicons only work in Mozilla Firefox 2.x, and Internet Explorer 7. Other browsers like Netscape and Opera I am nto sure about.
